Fundraising in uncertain times: What you need to know

I know that you, like so many in our sector, are feeling the weight of uncertainty right now.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been fielding versions of the same question from clients - and these concerns are likely on your mind too:

What impact is the current political climate going to have on our fundraising? Given the economic uncertainty ahead, should we be holding off or pressing pause on our capital campaign?

I’ll tell you what I told them:

Now is not the time to pull back on fundraising.

In fact, it’s the time to double down on your donor relationships.

To actively reach out, have more conversations, and be transparent about the needs, the opportunities, and the challenges that lie ahead for your nonprofit.

In my 25 years of major gift and capital campaign fundraising - through global crises like the Great Recession and the COVID pandemic - I’ve seen time and time again that donors remain committed in even the most challenging times.

In times of crisis, people seek meaning, connection, and purpose. That’s exactly what philanthropy can provide. Your donors are looking for ways to help - now more than ever.

That means your most important job right now is to reach out. Let them know how your organization is navigating this moment. Give them a chance to take action.

It’s also important to remember - you don’t have to navigate this alone.
